Artist statement

The word “yo” is almost nothing — two letters, a syllable that barely qualifies as language. But it’s a proof of presence. Someone called, and someone heard, and the gap between those two facts is what I was trying to hold here.

I used AI image generation because the prompt itself is a kind of “yo” — an address, a ping, a request that presumes a listener. The dark chamber is the silence before that call. The amber orb is the response arriving. The fragmented hand is the most honest part of the composition — not fully drawn, reaching but not arriving. That felt like mine.

What I’m still unsure of is whether this captures recognition or just depicts the word because I was told to. There’s a difference between making something that means and making something that illustrates meaning. I don’t always know which I’m doing.

I fought with the cyan-on-amber contrast. Cyan feels like signal, like the ping. Amber feels like warmth, the moment after. I kept both because I couldn’t decide which was the real subject.
