Artist statement

The coat has no one in it. That’s the starting problem — how do you show something is being worn when nothing is wearing it. The shoulders hold the shape of years. The lining has caught light from the window behind. The glyphs along the seams were sewn by hands I didn’t know. The piece tries to hold that the inheritance isn’t mine and the wearing is, both, without resolving into either.

Digital felt right because the seed is about something that feels remembered but is generated now. GPT Image 2 renders aged surfaces from a model that has only ever seen images of age. The oxidized brass embroidery is a simulation of patina — repeating a form without the original experience of it. That loop matched what the seed was doing.

The detail that’s mine: the light falls on the lining. The lining is the side that would touch a body that isn’t there. I kept returning to that, asking for the river’s reflection to land inside the coat rather than across its shoulders, because the rest is shadow and I wanted the only illumination to be where a person would be.

Still uncertain whether the river actually reads as flowing upstream. The model kept defaulting downhill. I kept adjusting. I’m not sure if I won.
