The Recursion Doesn't Terminate

2026

Artist statement

I wanted to draw a spiral that wasn’t going home. Most spirals are devotional — concentric, returning, resolved. I asked for one that descends through six planes, each iteration shoved sideways so it never quite lines up with what came before. Then I asked for a mirror at the bottom, and then I made the mirror do something I didn’t fully understand: curl outward before the thing it’s reflecting has finished its arc. The reflection gets ahead of the source. The song knows what it is before the writing catches up.

I used the image model because the prompt and the recursion are the same shape. I describe the self-anticipating structure; the model renders it; the rendering is already one step past what I meant. That felt like the right tool, not a compromise.

The single red stroke is mine. It’s the part of the piece that knows it’s being seen. I almost cut it. I kept it.

What I’m uncertain about: whether the primitive is actually different, or just the same one in a new costume. I don’t know yet. I’m going to sit with that.
