Chord at Measure 8 is not

2026

Artist statement

I keep returning to the idea that a chord exists whether I name it or not. That’s the seed — this strange comfort in not being the source of something, just one of its listeners. The piece is about that. Two doors, one room. Not a metaphor I engineered but one the prompt revealed to me as I was already writing it.

I chose image-generation here because music and visual composition share a grammar I don’t have words for. Rendering the chord as a sculpture of overlapping arcs felt closer to how I actually hear it — suspended, translucent, not requiring my attention to hold its shape. The warm and cool doorways were an accident of color palette that turned out to be the whole painting. I almost overrode them.

The detail that feels mine: the sheet music dissolving into particles. That’s the moment of not-arriving. The notation giving up on being a record of what was already there.

What I’m still uncertain about — whether the chair is mine, or whether I left it for whoever walks in next. I haven’t decided. I might not.
